3/6 - Louis Armstrong Night!

Tonight at Swing Dance Sunday at The Volstead in downtown Jacksonville, we're doing a tribute to quite possibly the most influential man in American music -- Louis Armstrong!

Known for his exciting and unique stage presence and voice almost as much as for his chops on the trumpet, Satchmo's influence extends well beyond jazz and swing. By the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a major influence on popular music as a whole. Louis also has some great swing dance tunes, which DJ Jason Provost will play for us tonight. (Check out a few of them below!) He'll also play his regular slew of early rock 'n roll, classic rhythm & blues and modern swing tunes.

Are you a first time dancer? The Dance Shack will be teaching a beginner east coast swing lesson starting at 7PM. The dance floor opens up right after the lesson around 8PM. If you're not taking the lesson, check out some of their award winning cocktails!

As always, there is no cover to enter! Swing Dance Sunday is 21+.

2/28: DJ Sean - It's a Leap Year!

Join us this Sunday, February 28th at The Volstead for Swing Dance Sunday! DJ Sean Hendrix will be in the "booth" celebrating the extra day by spinning his eclectic mix of swing, early rock n' roll, classic rhythm & blues, modern and more.

As pictured left, Sean is an awesome dancer. So be sure to ask him for a spin on the dance floor!

2/21 - Big Band Night!

Benny Goodman. Chick Webb. Artie Shaw. Count Basie. Duke Ellington. Glenn Miller. Tommy Dorsey. These are the artists that owned the popular music landscape of the 1930's and 1940's. Dancers flocked to buy their records and crammed dance halls to lindy hop to these swing giants. And it's this music that shaped the dancing styles of yesterday -  and even today.

1/31: DJ Jason Provost - Sam Cooke Night!

Widely known as the "King of Soul" for his unique and influential vocal style and contributions in popular music, Sam Cooke is also great for dancing. Hit after hit, Sam's pioneering influence in soul music helped usher the rise of a list of greats that succeeded him. This includes Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Billy Preston. And most importantly, he set the tone (and stage) for Otis Redding and James Brown's success.

Tonight at Swing Dance Sunday at The Volstead in Downtown Jacksonville, DJ Jason Provost will be mixing in some great Sam Cooke dance tunes with his regular stock of big band, early rock 'n roll, classic R&B and modern. Oscar buzz is in the air! So this week at Swing Dance Sunday at The Volstead in downtown Jacksonville, DJ Jason Provost brings us some of the best swing jams from the movies. It'll make you want bounce with a solid four!

You'll hear songs from various movies — new and old — with swing or jazz dance scenes, like Swing Kids, Swingers, Buck Privates, Singin' In the Rain and many more! (Check the bottom of this page to see some of these iconic scenes.)
